This research is to investigate the biological relationship between (potential) family members.
This research is done through DNA analysis so that a positive match will give a maximum of approximately 99.9% certainty unless it involves the paternity or maternity test. Exclusion can only happen with almost 100% certainty if it involves a paternity or maternity test, otherwise there will remain a margin of uncertainty.
As an example two siblings can each receive 50% of their DNA from each parent. Theoretically speaking each sibling can have completely different DNA profiles from one another since each parent can donate an alternate half of their DNA. This would result in each sibling being completely unique from the other.
